The Beginnings Of Aikido

The name ‘Aikido’ is created by the permutation of three characters in the Japanese language. ‘Ai’, which means ‘joining’; ‘ki’, which means ’spirit’ and ‘do’, which signifies ‘way’. These three characters really sum up the essence of Aikido as a type of martial art: ‘the joining of the spirit to find the way’. It was only in the period from 1930’s to the 1940’s that the name Aikido was legally accepted as the name of this martial art variety.

Aikido uses methods that do not seriously injure or kill not like different types of martial art. The movements and skills being taught are just intended to divert attention or immobilize attackers. This is perhaps the explanation why most people prefer Aikido, because of its concentration on peace and tranquility as opposed to violence and conflict. In deed, Aikido teacher, Morihei Ueshiba, believes that to have power over hostility without causing any injury is the art of peace.

Ueshiba, who is also called Osensei, which signifies ‘Great Teacher’, developed Aikido from the principles of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu. He integrated the ways of the ‘yari’, the spear; the ‘juken’, the bayonet; and the ‘jo’, which is a short quarterstaff. But what finally distinguishes Aikido from other kinds of martial art is the fact that its practitioners can strike while empty-handed. Proponents need no weaponry for their protection.

As a young child, he was much into physical fitness and conditioning. This was because of his oath to avenge his father’s enemies. In the end, his studies and activities brought him to the discipline of the various martial arts. He studied a few of them. He even has qualifications for fencing, fighting with spears, etc. He has studied it all. This is perhaps the reason why Aikido is such a diverse and multi-disciplinary form of martial art.

Yet in spite of his skill, he remained discontented. He felt that there was still something missing. It was then that he turned to the religions. He studied under a spiritual leader, Onisaburo Deguchi of the sect named Omoto-kyo in Ayabe. Deguchi taught him to take care of his psychic growth. He then combined his spiritual beliefs and his mastery of the different martial arts and Aikido was born.

His relationship with this fascinating spiritual leader Deguchi also paved the path for his introduction to the elite political and military personnel as a martial artist. Because of this association, he was able to launch Aikido and even pass on his knowledge to students, who have, in turn, developed their own methods and movement in Aikido.

Aikido is a blend of the diverse styles of jujitsu as well as some of the methods of sword and spear fighting, of which Ueshiba was an expert. To get an general idea, Aikido combines the joint locks and throws of jujitsu and the movements of the body necessary when fighting with swords and spears.

Oriental in origin, it was brought to the West by Minoru Mochizuki when he visited France in 1951. He introduced the Aikido methods to students who were learning judo. In 1952, Tadashi Abe came to France as the official Aikikai Honbu representative. Then in 1953, Kenji Tomiki toured throughout the United States while Koichi Tohei stayed in Hawaii for a full year where he set up a dojo. Aikido then spread its influence in the United Kingdom two years after and in 1965, it reached Germany and Australia. At present, Aikido has centres all over the world.

How Walking Can Help You To Lose Weight By Burning Calories And Increasing Your Metabolic Rate

More and more people are beginning to realise the many advantages of walking as a way to take exercise. It’s easy to do – it’s a low impact, low intensity, low injury risk workout that you already know how to do. It doesn’t need any special equipment or training and you can do it wherever and whenever you feel like it. You can walk in the street, in the park, on a treadmill – wherever you like and you can fit it into you day when it’s most convenient for you. It’s suitable for people of all ages as well.

If you’re trying to lose weight then walking is ideal. Keeping an eye on the amount of calories that you take on board is great – but dieting alone is not a very efficient way to shed the pounds. The combination of dieting with regular exercise will give you much better results. First of all, you will burn calories whilst you exercise – and that’s good. But secondly, regular exercise will actually raise your metabolic rate – the rate at which you burn calories. Even when you’re not exercising the rate at which you burn calories will be higher and this will help to deliver good weight loss results for you.

The health benefits which walking is capable of delivering are very impressive. It can lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. It can help to reduce your blood pressure level. It can help to improve your cholesterol levels. It can help to reduce the risk of diabetes. It can even help to lower the risk of contracting certain types of cancer. It will give you more energy and leave you feeling less tired throughout the day. It will help you to sleep better at night. It is effective in fighting anxiety and depression. Recent research in the UK suggests that it might even be effective in fighting off Alzheimer’s disease.

That’s got to be enough motivation for you to consider including walking in your exercise program. As mentioned previously, you don’t need any special equipment. A good pair of comfortable shoes is all you need to get started.

If you want to monitor your progress, a pedometer is a useful device. It will monitor your progress and display your results in terms of distance covered, number of steps take or calories burned – whatever is most interesting for you and keeps your motivation up. An mp3 player might be another good investment if you don’t already have one. The mile will pass more quickly if you’re listening to your favourite tunes as you stride along. However, neither of these are strictly necessary to get started. Just make sure your shoes fit well and don’t give you blisters and you’ll be all set.

Before you embark on a walking exercise regime – or any exercise programme for that matter – it’s a good idea to seek your doctor’s opinion, especially if you haven’t exercised for a while or have any medical conditions. Walking is certainly a low impact, low injury risk mode of exercising – but it’s still exercise and a few stretches before you begin – and again when you’re finished – will help to make sure that you avoid any strains or sprains and get the most out of your exercise routine.

Discover how Fitflops exercise shoes can boost the effectiveness of your walking workout. They are specially engineered to increase the amount of work done by the lower body muscles when walking. Both women’s and men’s Fitflops are available in a large range of colors and styles.

Is Walking An Effective Way To Take Exercise?

Are you one of the very many people who would like to take more exercise but, for whatever reason, you just can’t seem to get around to it? There are certainly enough reasons – or excuses – to avoid taking exercise. Lack of time, lack of energy, lack of the right equipment, lack of training – there are plenty of justifiable reasons why it’s easier to skip exercise than get on and do it. Considering also the fact that exercise can be costly – monthly gym fees can be very expensive – it’s perfectly understandable that so many of us get a lot less exercise than we should.

What if there was a way to exercise that required no special equipment, which was easy to do and which didn’t need you to get all hot and sweaty? It would probably be a lot easier to get yourself motivated to take exercise on a more regular basis. Were it also a form of exercise that could be performed whenever it was easiest for you, then that would be better yet.

Fortunately, such a form of exercise does exist – although you may not have considered it. Walking is an activity that we all perform every day. It needs no training, expertise or special equipment. As long as you have a good, comfortable pair of shoes you’re all set. It’s also a very cost effective method of exercising – and you can slot it into your daily routine whenever you like.

The possible health benefits available as a result of walking on a regular basis read like the product description of the latest wonder drug. Walking can help to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke whilst increasing lung capacity. It helps to combat anxiety and depression, and it helps you to sleep better at night. It can lower the risk of certain forms of cancer. It boosts your energy level and leaves you feeling generally better overall. Recent research in the UK suggests that it may even be effective in combating Alzheimer’s disease. It helps to increase bone density, build muscle and to lose weight.

Most health professionals seem to be in agreement that 10,000 steps a day is a good target for anyone who wishes to achieve the previously mentioned health benefits. That’s a little under five miles for someone with an average stride length.

Whilst that may sound like a long way, you would probably be surprised at just how easy it is to achieve. Leaving the car at home and walking to work once or twice a week is a good start. Or, if you travel by bus or subway, get off one or two stops in advance of your final destination and complete your journey on foot. If you do decide to take the car, then don’t feel guilty about it. Just park in the corner of the parking lot so that you have further to walk to the entrance. Go for a ten or fifteen minute stroll during your lunch break. The possibilities are endless – and they soon add up.

You should exercise a little common sense and start out slowly, building up gradually only when you feel comfortable to do so. If you are over forty or have any medical conditions then you should get the advice of your doctor before you commence any new exercise program. However, as walking is a low intensity, low impact and low injury risk method of taking exercise, it should be suitable for the vast majority of people and, as discussed earlier, the potential health benefits are enormous.

Taking Steps To Get In Shape – With A Walking Workout

Many people shy away from exercise as they imagine that it will be too taxing for them. It’s as if they think that they need to already be fit before they can get in shape. It’s hardly surprising that many of us tend to associate getting in shape with high energy fitness routines and getting hot, sweaty and out of breath.

On the other side of the coin, it’s hard for many people to imagine that a low impact, low injury risk workout – an activity which we all do every day – can deliver major health benefits and help you to get in much better shape. However, that’s exactly what walking – a form of exercise which needs no special equipment, training or expertise – can do for you.

And when you take a look at the list of health benefits which regular walking can provide, your sense of disbelief is only likely to grow still further.Walking can help to reduce your blood pressure level. It can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke whilst simultaneously improving lung capacity. It can release endorphins and help to combat depression, make you feel more energetic and help you to sleep better. It can be effective against different forms of cancer. Recent research in the UK suggests that it may even help to stave off Alzheimer’s disease. It can raise your metabolic rate and help you to lose weight.

Looking at that list you would be forgiven for thinking that it was an advert for some expensive new dietary supplement or even the latest miracle drug. No wonder that it’s difficult to credit. It’s also worth mentioning that – apart from a comfy pair of shoes – you don’t need any special equipment to get started on a walking exercise routine. Neither will it cost you any money – there are no expensive gym membership fees to pay each month. You also have the convenience of being able to fit it into your day whenever it suits you best.

Health professionals seem to agree that we should be targeting 10,000 steps a day on a regular basis in order to get the health benefits previously discussed. That equivalent to just under five miles for most people, although it depends upon your stride length somewhat. It sounds like a fair old distance – but it’s easier to achieve than you think. Walk to work and leave the car at home. Take the stairs instead of the lift. Get off the bus a stop before your destination and walk the last leg of your journey. These are just a few examples of ways to increase your daily step count – there are plenty more, and they all add up.

If you are over forty years old, if you have any medical conditions, or if you just haven’t exercised for some time, then it would be wise to seek your doctor’s advice and opinion before you launch any new fitness regime. However, as long as you start off slowly and build up over time, walking will improve your health and fitness levels. More importantly, you will both look and feel much better.

Have a look at the wide selection of styles available from Fit flops – sandals, boots, clogs and slippers. Try using an Omron pedometer to monitor your performance and help you to stay motivated.

Quick Strategies For A Fantastic Weight Training Work Out Schedule

Body building looks like an incredibly difficult activity. This is because most of the publicity goes to individuals who are capable of lifting hundreds of pounds (sometimes thousands) and whose muscles are huge-much larger than the well proportioned muscles you are probably hoping to develop. This type of thing is not what the sport is really about, which is building your health, increasing your energy and strengthening your stamina. It will keep you in shape while working all of your muscles. When paired with a healthy diet and good lifestyle choices, body building is an amazing activity. Here are some helpful body building tips and tricks to help you learn how to body build properly.

Find someone to help you. As a beginner you are bound to make mistakes when you are putting together your workout. A training partner or a personal trainer can help you form good habits from the outset. Working with someone who has more experience than you will also help you develop a good training regimen. You are far more likely to have success and will make fewer mistakes and be less likely to hurt yourself. Eventually you might get to the point where you can plan out your own work out routines but when you are first starting out, find someone to teach you what to do. Your body will be very grateful that you did.

Body building relies quite a bit upon proper protein intake. It is very important that you get enough protein so that your muscles will be able to build back up correctly after you work out. Body builders are well known for using protein powders to help them make sure that they take in enough protein calories to keep their bodies healthy. When you are first tarting the sport this probably won’t be as important to you. Eating a well balanced diet should be all you need to do when you are new to the sport. If, however, you find yourself really enjoying body building and you want to intensify the duration and frequency of your workouts, upping your protein intake is a good idea (it will help compensate for the needs of your muscles). You should ask your doctor about the different types of protein powder.

It is okay to take a moment to relax and rest between exercises. The best way to cause an unnecessary injury is to push yourself too hard. The best way to build your stamina is to increase the length of your workout by allowing yourself a few moments to rest at regular intervals. People who try to plow right through a routine usually end up dehydrated. This kind of thing will almost always cause you to strain or pull at least one or two muscles. You could even make yourself so weak that you have to stop your routine before it is completed. Even the pros let themselves take some time to rest now and again!

Body building is a perfectly legitimate way to work your muscles, build your strength and increase your health. Lots of people chalk body building up to nothing more than a hobby. It is actually a wonderful way to strengthen and tone your muscles as you work to increase the healthfulness of your lifestyle. If you have the right mindset, you can strengthen and reward your whole body with body building.

Retirement Gifts For Golfers

There is a common belief that golf is the normal pastime-cum-sport of big shot entrepreneurs and businessmen. It is also perceived as being an elite sport and not accessible by regular blue collared employees. However, this is not the reality as modernization and commercialization have brought these so called elite sports into the reach of ordinary workers.

This is because there is no necessity to buy sophisticated equipment to have a round, so, unlike big game fishing and polo which need very costly resources like a boat or a horse respectively, golfers only require a set of golf clubs, which are reasonably affordable. With this in mind, retirement gifts for golfers and aspiring golfers can be easily dreamed up.

Making personalized retirement gifts for golfers is quite an easy task as you could easily personalize golfing equipment with items such as home made golf club pouches, and caddy covers. These can be made by knitting (that is if you are into knitting) or any other handicraft requiring other materials.

You could think about golfing fashion by concentrating on the attire worn by golfers. You could even end up starting a new trend in golfing clothing by the using your imagination regarding the design of the clothing for your retiree.

The most easiest way of getting a retirement gift for golfers is to go to the local sports shop and get your retiree something they sell there. It may sound a little impersonal, but then this may prove really useful, if the retiree is still a novice golfer. Maybe, you could buy a golfing book, a subscription to a golfing magazine or a box of personalized golf balls.

However, you could find out what your retiree golfer still needs, and perhaps also use your imagination to think about in what ways you can enhance the golfing equipment he may already have.

Commercially made golfing equipment is always a safe bet. If you want to make your retiree feel great, buy him or her a famous-name set of golf clubs, thereby making him feel like a professional.

You could go to a joke shop and ask if they have any gags for the golfer there. They probably do, since golfing is such a popular game.

Gag gifts should be chosen very carefully since they could raise sensitive matters for the retiree, especially novice players. Gags as gifts in relation to golfing might be taken the wrong way and put them off, if they are upset by the idea suggested by the gag or joke given to them.

As for veteran players who are already well adapted to the game, the gift of a good gag on their retirement day would be quite funny as they would already see golfing not only as a way to relieve stress, but also to actually have some fun in a competitive environment.

Retirement gifts for golfers are just a simple way to make your golfer friend enjoy life after his career is over.

Crock Pot Recipes – Cheesecake

Have you ever cooked with a crock pot? Or what we call a slow cooker in the UK? My father gave me a crock pot for Christmas twenty-five years ago and I only had to replace it, for the reason that it was stolen. Some thief must have heard they were great and stole it for his wife.

It was good-looking enough to leave out on the work top and I guess that is how it caught my burglar’s eye. It was stoneware, really nice.

That is one of the points I would like to make in this article, some of the crock pots from the better manufacturers are pretty enough to take to the table. The other point I would like to make is that crock pots are not only for making soup or stews in.

I have recipes in the house for bread and cheesecake. Really, most people just do not believe me when I tell them what you can actually do with a crock pot, especially the modern programmable ones.

To prove it, I have reproduced one of my cheesecake recipes below. If you can not be bothered to make, just take it from me that it is gorgeous, simple enough to make and practically automatic to make. Those of you do get around to making it will agree with me, I am sure.

APPLE-NUT CHEESECAKE

Crust:

1 cup (scant) graham cracker crumbs 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons sugar 3 tablespoons butter, melted 1/4 cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts

Filling:

16 ounces cream cheese 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated white sugar 2 large eggs 3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 teaspoon vanilla Topping: 1 large apple, thinly sliced (about 1 1/2 cups) 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon finely chopped pecans or walnuts

Combine the crust ingredients and pat into a 7-inch spring form pan. Beat the sugars into the cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Beat in eggs, whipping cream, cornstarch, and vanilla. Beat for about 3 minutes on the medium speed of a hand-held electric mixer. Pour the mixture into the prepared crust. Combine the apple slices with the sugar, cinnamon and nuts and then spread the topping evenly over the top of the cheesecake. Place the cheesecake on a rack (or “ring” of aluminum foil to keep it off the bottom of the pot) in the Crock Pot. Cover and cook on high for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Let it stand in the covered pot (after turning it off) for about 1 to 2 hours, until cool enough to handle. Cool it thoroughly before removing the pan sides. Chill before serving; store leftovers in the refrigerator for any normal shop-bought cheesecake, but yours will be better..

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with researching the programmable crock pot. If you have an interest in cooking or crock pots, please go over to our website now at Large Crock Pots

Why Walking Is Such A Great Way To Get In Shape

Walking is a great form of exercise which the large majority of people can do. It requires no special equipment or training, it’s free and you can fit it into your day whenever it suits you best. The health benefits read like an advert for some new wonder drug or health supplement – and they can be obtained with no more than minor changes to your daily routine.

A target of 10,000 steps daily is often quoted as being the magic number required in order to achieve the health benefits on offer. That’s roughly equivalent to a distance of between 4.5 and 5.0 miles for the average person. It does sound like a fair old walk – but it’s a lot easier to achieve than you might imagine. Besides, when you think about the possible health benefits, it’s worth a little extra effort.

We do live in an increasingly sedentary society – so it’s quite probable that you take fewer than the recommended 10,000 steps a day. A good first step – if you’ll pardon the pun – might be to get yourself a pedometer so that you will know how many steps you take in the average day. You can find these at fairly low prices these days – but do be sure to get one with a double axis sensor as this will provide you with a more accurate reading.

Once you’ve established exactly how many steps you average per day, you should look for ways to make up any difference between your daily average and the 10,000 step target. There are many different ways to do this – but be sensible and build up gradually – don’t try to do everything all at once.

If you have enough time in your daily routine to fit in a dedicated walk then that’s ideal of course. However, if you can’t manage this, then there are many other ways to increase your daily step count. At lunchtime take a ten or fifteen minute stroll around the block instead of sitting in front of your computer. Get off the bus one or two stops early and finish your journey on foot. Leave your car at home and walk now and again – or, if that’s not possible, then park your car in the far corner of the parking lot so that you have further to walk to the entrance.

Make the most of modern technology by walking and talking when you’re on your mobile phone. A fifteen minute telephone call can give you the opportunity to get in somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 extra steps. There are many other opportunities to get your step count up – and they soon mount up.

If you’re over forty, if you have any medical conditions, or if you just haven’t exercised for some time, then it would be a good idea to seek the opinion and advice of your doctor before you start any new fitness regime. However, walking is a low impact, low injury risk workout which will, as long as you exercise a little common sense, deliver significant health benefits. Before you know it, you will be feeling better, enjoying higher energy levels and shedding pounds.

Use an Omron pedometer to monitor your progress and try Fit flops exercise shoes to help maximise the effectiveness of your walking exercise routine.
