The History Of Archery

Archers have played a key part in warfare and hunting for thousands of years. Primitive bows were made of a single piece of wood, but composite recurve bows were being manufactured from Greece to China as far back as the second millennium BC.

Recurve bows, those with the ends facing the ‘wrong way’ when unstrung, are more powerful inch for inch in length than one piece wooden bows, which made them more suited to cramped conditions such as on horseback, in a chariot or in woodlands.

Pieces of composite recurve bows, usually made from horn, have been found in many regions of the world. Early arrows were made from naturally straight twigs or pine needles with napped flint tips affixed. Wooden bows did not preserve so well and exemplars are rare.

It appears that archery was being developed in the early Mesolithic or late Paleolithic Age. Archery was particularly well developed in some Islamic countries and in Asia, where Zen Buddhist monks used archery as part of their meditation techniques.

In the early days of archery, there were miscellaneous feelings about archers. In those days, people battled hand to hand with swords and spears and some of the traditionalists thought that archers were cowards because they attacked from a distance out of direct danger. This point is made quite clear in ‘The Iliad’, Homer’s account to the siege of Troy.

There are or were many types of bows made to suit different fighting or hunting requirements. Some varieties of bow are the; long bow, short bow, recurve bow, composite recurve bow, reflex bow, decurve bow, deflex bow and crossbow among others.

The longbow was extremely hard to learn to use and the archer needed considerable upper-body strength. The bow was often six feet long with a weighty three foot long arrow. The draw weight for maximum power was around a hundred pounds and the use of the bow on a battlefield was as long-range artillery.

The heavy arrows and vicious armour-piercing arrow head would rain down on the enemy from a hundred yards or more and penetrate shields and armour as if they did not exist. Shot horizontally, the three-foot arrow could pass through a couple of people.

In fact, the longbow was so essential to the triumph of Great Britain that a law was passed making it compulsory for men over a particular age to practice with their longbows every Sunday on the village green in order to develop the required expertise and upper-body strength in case war came.

The arrows are made to suit the different types of bows and the different bows and their specific arrows are suited to different kinds of hunting – whether you are hunting men or animals.

There are basically two styles of shooting: instinctive shooting, which is very difficult as the archer does not take his eyes off the target, but does not look down the arrow; and sight shooting where the archer makes use of sights to align the arrow with its target. Most people find sight shooting easier.

Calendars And Their Background

The calendar is such a routine, everyday thing, but how much do you actually know about the operation of it. Why is it like that?

A DAY: The Earth turns at a reasonably steady speed about the imaginary line running between the North and South Poles named the Earth’s Axis. The time it takes to spin once is called a ‘rotation’ and this takes just under twenty-four hours. Nevertheless, because the Earth is constantly travelling around the Sun, the precise time from noon one day to noon the next is 3 minutes 56 seconds longer and this makes a day almost precisely twenty-four hours in length.

The real time from noon to noon varies depending where the Earth is on its celestial course around the Sun, but if you average the days in a year out, it comes to precisely twenty-four hours.

A YEAR: All nine planets in our solar system move around the Sun in approximately perfectly circular routes called orbits. Each trip around the Sun is called a revolution and all the planets orbit around the Sun in the same direction. The course the Earth takes can be verified by noting its location against the background stars.

In view of the fact that you cannot see the Sun and the stars at the same time, it is necessary to note the position of the Sun in the morning and the see which stars come out there in the night. You will see that the Sun seems to pass through the twelve constellations of the zodiac during a year.

Earth’s journey around the Sun, which seems like the Sun travelling through the zodiac takes about 365.25 days. This is different from year to year, so astronomers add or delete a second in some years to keep their time accurate with the Earth’s motion.

THE SEASONS: The seasons mark the change in the pattern of daylight over the span of a year. Because the Earth is tilted off centre, different parts of it receive different amounts of sunlight on different stages of its path around the Sun, a path that we call a year. So, between approximately the 21st September and late March, the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun, which produces Autumn and Winter, giving less than twelve hours of daylight per day.

From April to the 20th September, the Northern Hemisphere enjoys more than twelve hours of daylight a day, producing Spring and Summer. The exact opposite occurs in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Equinoxes take place at the points in the year when there is exactly twelve hours of sunlight and darkness in the day. So, the vernal or Spring equinox is on or around the 21st March and the autumnal equinox is on or around the 21st September. Summer officially commences on the day with the greatest amount of daylight, the 21st June or summer solstice.

The winter solstice is on the shortest day, the 21st December. ‘Solstice’ is a combination of two words meaning ’sun standing still’ and the days are so named because they are the days when the apparent movement of the Sun reaches its limits and reverses direction again.

Hybrid Electric Engines.

Have you ever asked yourself about hybrid cars? They certainly look stylish and modern, but what is it about them that makes them so different and so extraordinary? After all, most cars look the same these days, do they not? They are all designed by computer to be aerodynamic and aerodynamic is aerodynamic, so they all end up looking impossible to tell apart to anyone who is not an aficionado.

Well, the fact is that the difference between a hybrid car and a normal car lies under the bonnet. There are different types of hybrid vehicles as well, but the most common sort has a hybrid electric engine. Therefore, you could say that what makes hybrid cars different from most other, normal cars is their engine.

Or engines actually, because hybrid electric cars essentially have two engines. One, the internal combustion engine, runs on gasoline, LPG or diesel and the other, the electric motor, runs off electricity stored in an array of heavy-duty batteries. On the other hand, normal cars only have an internal combustion engine. It is a good idea to examine these two types of engine separately.

First of all the electric motor. Electrical energy is generated by several components on the car and stored in a large bank or array of powerful batteries. The electricity is created by the turning of the internal combustion engine, just as with a standard car, when it is in use, but also by the wheels or / and the car’s braking system. Different models have different methods of generating this electricity, but they are all very hi-tech and very efficient.

When the car’s internal computers decide that the car no longer needs the strength of the internal combustion engine, it will turn it off and switch to the electric motor instead. The conditions where this might happen are, for example, when you are driving slowly in inner-city traffic, when you are cruising at moderate speed on a flat road or when you are going down hill. This saves a considerable amount of fuel, which is clearly a great saving to you.

However, there are times when you need more power than the batteries can give you, for instance, when accelerating hard, when overtaking or when climbing a hill. At times such as these, the electric motor will close down and the combustion engine will take over and start supplying power to the accelerator and electricity to the batteries. When the need for extra power has ceased, the batteries will take over again.

These choices are all taken by the hybrid electric vehicle’s (HEV’s) on board computer system and you will not notice much other that a rush of power or a quietening of the propulsion system. This works very well in most scenarios, but some drivers of HEV’s would like to have a manual override for abnormal circumstances, such as an undulating terrain.

All in all, cars with hybrid electric engines work very well at reducing fuel bills but they are still too dear to be much more than a gimmicky toy and a salve to the conscience for the well-to-do.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article writes on a lot of subjects, but is currently involved with hybrid electric engines. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at New Hybrid Vehicles.

Calendars – Why They Can Be A Bit Out

Thousands of years ago, ancient Greek astronomers calculated that the track of the Earth’s axis is constantly, even if in a very slow way, shifting in a uniform pattern. The variation is very similar to the manner a spinning top slowly leans one way and then another as it slows down. It is a wobble that happens as its axis alters direction.

This odd movement of the planet is owing to several factors, the most significant of which is something called ‘precession’. Precession arises from the fact that the Earth is not a perfect globe. It is in fact about twenty-seven miles longer about the Equator that it is around the Poles. The Earth then is oblate, or fat around the middle like middle-aged spread, but it is due to the spinning not to its age.

If you picture the Earth with its Poles off centre. Then rotate that image and you will find that any point, except the very centre of the axis, will travel in a circle. But very, very gradually. So gradually that it takes 26,000 years to travel full circle and get back to where it started from.

This point then, any point you choose, is very gradually shifting its location in relation to the stars because the axis is gyrating too. The result of this is that, what we call the North Star (formally known as Polaris, which is in fact one degree off true North) will not be over our North Pole one day. In fact, by about 15,000 AD, Vega will be almost above the North Pole, although it will be about four degrees off true North. But even this will not endure, and by 28,000 AD, Polaris will be back above where it is nowadays.

One of the effects of the precession is that seasons vary. They modify the dates that they take place, so that Summer could come earlier or later. The amazing thing about our calendar is that it is corrected for that (with the leap year). If it were not, the vernal or Spring equinox would shift over 13,000 years from March 21st to September 21st., which is the date of the autumnal equinox, precisely half a year later.

It is for this reason that the precession of the Earth is generally referred to as the “Precession of the Equinoxes”. Although the precession of the equinoxes is very slow, it can be easily observed. The correct year of 325.25 days is the length of time from one vernal equinox to the next vernal equinox, however, it takes 20 minutes and 24 seconds longer for the Sun to appear in exactly the same place with relation to the stars behind it over the same period. It is for this reason that accurate star maps have to be stamped with the exact time and date to which they refer.

Retirement Gifts For Golfers

There is a common belief that golf is the normal pastime-cum-sport of big shot entrepreneurs and businessmen. It is also perceived as being an elite sport and not accessible by regular blue collared employees. However, this is not the reality as modernization and commercialization have brought these so called elite sports into the reach of ordinary workers.

This is because there is no necessity to buy sophisticated equipment to have a round, so, unlike big game fishing and polo which need very costly resources like a boat or a horse respectively, golfers only require a set of golf clubs, which are reasonably affordable. With this in mind, retirement gifts for golfers and aspiring golfers can be easily dreamed up.

Making personalized retirement gifts for golfers is quite an easy task as you could easily personalize golfing equipment with items such as home made golf club pouches, and caddy covers. These can be made by knitting (that is if you are into knitting) or any other handicraft requiring other materials.

You could think about golfing fashion by concentrating on the attire worn by golfers. You could even end up starting a new trend in golfing clothing by the using your imagination regarding the design of the clothing for your retiree.

The most easiest way of getting a retirement gift for golfers is to go to the local sports shop and get your retiree something they sell there. It may sound a little impersonal, but then this may prove really useful, if the retiree is still a novice golfer. Maybe, you could buy a golfing book, a subscription to a golfing magazine or a box of personalized golf balls.

However, you could find out what your retiree golfer still needs, and perhaps also use your imagination to think about in what ways you can enhance the golfing equipment he may already have.

Commercially made golfing equipment is always a safe bet. If you want to make your retiree feel great, buy him or her a famous-name set of golf clubs, thereby making him feel like a professional.

You could go to a joke shop and ask if they have any gags for the golfer there. They probably do, since golfing is such a popular game.

Gag gifts should be chosen very carefully since they could raise sensitive matters for the retiree, especially novice players. Gags as gifts in relation to golfing might be taken the wrong way and put them off, if they are upset by the idea suggested by the gag or joke given to them.

As for veteran players who are already well adapted to the game, the gift of a good gag on their retirement day would be quite funny as they would already see golfing not only as a way to relieve stress, but also to actually have some fun in a competitive environment.

Retirement gifts for golfers are just a simple way to make your golfer friend enjoy life after his career is over.

In order to provide the right landscape lighting conditions, you will be able to choose from a wide variety of lighting fixtures. These fittings can be in the form of lamps, lanterns, spotlights, halogen lights and even solar-powered lights. The price of these lighting fixtures varies for each style of lighting.

In the morning you will need to look what places in your garden would be improved by the use of landscape lighting. When night falls look out at your garden again and see what areas would benefit from the use of lighting.

Then, the morning after this nocturnal inspection, you should go out into the garden and mark out roughly where you feel there is a need for lighting. Once you have looked at this area properly, try imagining what sort of lights would be of use. Pheasant Farms Offer A Great Resource For Hunters & Pheasants

Pheasants are located worldwide and have many different different shades. There’s everything from the white-eared pheasant to the reddish colored Blood pheasant, and everything else in between. Pheasants are extremely particular regarding where they live, they need good habitat in the wild to thrive. Particular habitats tend to be more protective of pheasants and their eggs than other places, and it prevents being fed upon. The wildcat is the most dangerous predator to the wild pheasant. It can leap off the ground and pull one right out the sky at enormous speed and be eating lunch within seconds. In regions that have raccoons and snakes, the eggs will be in peril also.

It is becoming more common to find pheasant hunting farms across the United States. The farms will raise the young birds till they are big enough to release into the habitat, insuring a strong population for hunting.

Good hunting dogs are imperative to being successful on the hunting range. A good dog will not only find the bird, but also scare and retrieve it for you. Labrador retrievers are the most sought after dogs for hunting pheasant. It’s important to make sure your dog is in good shape before taking it out hunting for the first time. Your dog needs to build up to it because it will be chasing a lot of game and it can be a bad experience for a dog if it is not used to it.

Water is a commonplace to find pheasants during the hot times of the summer. This can be a good way to make sure that the local population is strong. They enjoy ponds, creeks, streams, faucets, irrigation areas as well as pumps. I know that in Wisconsin that you can only hunt pheasant from mid-October to the end of the year, so it pays to scout for birds during the warmer parts of the year. When it is time to hunt, you can expect to find the best hunting in the mornings and afternoons of the day. The early morning hours seemed to be the best time of the day to take a lot of pheasant because they’re just waking and not as alert to danger because they are out gathering food.

It is always a good practice to wait for the birds to settle back down. When you and your dog first arrive, there will be a lot more action on part of the pheasants to move and find shelter. Just hold still and wait for things to calm down. It is important that you have tracking skills and have scouted the area prior to going hunting. On a pheasant farm you don’t have to worry about finding birds as they are often releases just hours prior to your hunt.
