What Are Asset Management Techniques?

How does one go about taking care of one’s property – one’s worldly possessions? Well, the majority of people put their money in the bank, put the jewellery in a safe and insure the rest. But insurance is not really taking care of your possessions, is it? It is taking care of yourself so that you do not have renew them with your own money.

In the old days, and even now, I suppose in some places, you would hire a boy to watch over your sheep or cattle or bring them in at night for fear of lions, wolves or rustlers. These were an early form of security guard and indeed wealthy people had and often still do have personal body guards.

What if you had a substantial office with a hundred laptop computers – laptops because people had to do field work too? How would you keep track on all those? A car is another good case in point and construction site machinery is being stolen all the time even from under the watchful gaze of (or with the compliance of) private security companies.

So what can you do? Get dogs? That works sometimes, but they can be poisoned. Get video cameras and passive infra-red movement sensors linked to a control centre? That works and many firms and private houses have it, but it is very expensive.

As a cheap alternative, the police were handing out free pens in the UK, which wrote in invisible ink. The idea was to put your postcode and house number. This ink became visible under a certain kind of light. That is all very well if you have a suspect or found property.

Bar codes are not practical, the pen is better. It all comes back to insurance or surveillance.

However, there is another way that is becoming reasonably priced. The idea has been around for approximately 85 years, but it was too pricey to use on anything smaller than an airplane or a battle tank.

I am talking about radio frequency identification or RFID for short. The concept is the same one that aircraft have been using since during the Second World War – a transponder sends out precoded information in answer to a demand from an RF reader.

Details regarding ownership and details of what the item is can be written to an RFID chip also known as a tag and the tag can then be taped inside the item that it is to safeguard.

There are two varieties of tag: the passive and the active. Passive tags will only reply if information is asked for by a reader, whereas an active tag is always on.

Many entrepreneurs use RFID tagging to keep track of their assets. In the case of farm animals, most cattle are tagged nowadays. Most large offices have their IT goods tagged as well and we all know that clothing stores have been tagging garments for years, although perhaps you did not realize what that button was that they were taking off at the checkout.

People are already tagging their dogs, cats and cars and it will not be long before these asset management techniques will be used extensively at home too. Insurance companies may demand on it.

Owen Jones, the author of this article writes on quite a few topics, but is now concerned with the RFID asset management. If you would like to know more, please go to our website at Active RFID Management.

Why A Good Ironing Board Is Essential

Whilst it may be a mundane piece of equipment, and one to which most people would give very little thought, a good ironing board is an essential item for any household. Choose the wrong one and you could wind up with poorly ironed clothes, spend more time than you need to ironing and even give yourself a bad back.

Most people use steam irons these days – or possibly even steam generator irons, which are becoming popular due to the fact that they can reduce the amount of time spent ironing by 50%. For either of these types of irons, an ironing board with an open mesh surface construction is a good choice. This allows the steam to pass through the garment being pressed, through the cover of the ironing board and through the mesh surface of the board itself. When a lot of items are being ironed in one session, this helps to avoid any build up of condensation which might otherwise cause both the garments and the cover of the board to become soggy.

The ironing board cover should be as smooth as possible to make ironing easier. It should be well secured and have no tendency to slip. An elasticated cover which incorporates one or two cross ties will usually suffice and will not slide around on you when you’re doing your ironing. A nice shiny metalised cover will also reflect heat from the iron back into the garment and will help to remove creases from the underside of the material whilst the top surface is being pressed.

The shape and size of the board will depend upon what you generally iron. A smaller board may be easier to manipulate and store – but it will generally require more repositioning of the item being ironed. A good taper on the pointed end will be useful for getting into corners – the shoulders of shirts and blouses for example – and will also be good for collars.

Scissor action legs which allow you to adjust the height of the board are pretty much standard these days. Make sure that you set the board height at a level that’s comfortable for you and doesn’t strain your back. If you’re the only one who irons (I bet you are) then a position marker is always useful. If you like to sit down whilst ironing then choose a board which has curved legs so that your knees don’t bang against the legs when you’re sitting down. Whatever type of legs you go for, they should provide good support and give you a stable platform to iron upon. A broad T-piece foot or splayed feet joined by a connecting bar usually works well.

The support for the iron should be strong enough to support the iron’s weight. For a traditional steam iron a wire frame type of arrangement is generally sufficient. Due to their large base units, steam generator irons can be quite a bit heavier than normal steam irons. A slightly longer board which just uses a heat resistant plate on its surface may be better for this type of iron. Alternatively, the base unit could be placed on the floor – as long as the connecting hose between the base unit and the iron is long enough to allow this.

A Tefal steam generator iron – will reduce the amount of time you spend ironing by fifty percent. You’ll wonder how you managed without one.

How Is The Operating Efficiency Of Your Domestic Appliances Influenced By A Hard Water Supply?

The domestic water supply to the majority of homes is “hard water”. Hard water is simply a definition used to describe water which has a fairly high concentration of minerals dissolved in it. Calcium and magnesium are the two most important minerals. There is, according to the World Health Organisation, absolutely no health risk associated with hard water. However, it can have an effect on the operating efficiency and useful lifetime of a number of different household appliances.

As a consequence of hard water, mineral deposits can be laid down in water pipes and a range of household appliances. Household appliances which use hot or boiling water are especially at risk as heating the water frees the minerals it contains which then solidify as “scale”. Coffee makers, kettles, steam irons, dishwashers and washing machines are all prone to this effect – as are household central heating systems and boilers.

The amounts of minerals that are released depend upon a number of different variables. One of these is temperature – the higher the temperature of the water, the more minerals will be released and the more scale will form. Running central heating systems, washing machines and dishwashers at lower temperature settings will reduce the amount of scale deposited and ensure that these appliances operate efficiently and have a long lifetime. Some soaps and detergents contain anti-scaling ingredients and these can also help to minimise scaling.

Using a lower water temperature with appliances such as steam irons, kettles and coffee makers isn’t very practical. Some kettles come with filters built in these days, which can prevent or reduce the incursion of harmful minerals (as well as improving the taste of hot drinks). Some modern irons incorporate specially designed, removable scale traps which make it easy to wash away any scale under a running tap. Other alternatives include periodically cleaning your appliances with special anti-scale chemicals.

Although there are no health problems associated with a hard water supply, many people will dislike the resulting taste of hot drinks or boiled and steamed food. On the other hand, some people actually prefer the taste of tea that is made using hard water to that made using soft water – it is, in the truest sense of the word, a matter of taste. If you don’t like the taste of your hot drinks and food, then you can make use of a water filter. A simple, but effective, jug filter will work – or you could install an under sink or whole house filter if you prefer.

Whilst it may seem like a bit of an inconvenience, it’s well worth taking a little effort to combat the effects of a hard water supply. Apart from improved efficiency of domestic appliances, using the right detergents, operating at a lower water temperature and occasional cleaning will save you money and extend the life of your household goods.

A Tefal steam generator iron – will slash your ironing time in half. You’ll wonder how you managed without one.

Lower Prices For The Kindle Reader Family

The Amazon Kindle reader seemed to be the perfect product for Amazon. It totally dominated the e-book reader market, accounting for 60% of all e-book reader sales, and it was hard to see where the competition was coming from. There were many predictions of a “Kindle killer”, but despite the release of new readers by the likes of Sony, Barnes and Noble, Plastic Logic and Bookeen, the Kindle looked set to hold on to its number one position.

Then the Apple iPad came along and, although it is an entirely different device, it did look set to spoil the party somewhat. The iPad is not without some fairly major flaws of its own, and whilst most Apple devices seem to provoke a “love them or loathe them” response, the numbers of people who would buy almost anything with the Apple logo on it are certainly large enough to make a major dent in the sales of the Kindle.

It wasn’t just the fact that Apple were releasing new hardware, they also negotiated a deal with a number of the major publishing houses which allowed them to set the price of the e-book versions of their publications at whatever level they wanted. The only condition was that they could not offer the same e-book edition on any other online retailer for a lower price. This effectively put paid to Amazon’s policy of pricing all Kindle books at $ 9.99 or less and, since this deal was struck, it does look as if the average price of e-books has been edging steadily upwards.

The price of the e-book readers themselves has fallen however. Barnes and Noble cut the price of their Nook reader to $ 199. Amazon’s Kindle 2.0 is now selling for just $ 189 – a huge reduction over the $ 359 launch price of February 2009. The Kindle DX can now be yours for just $ 379, a saving of $ 110 over the previous $ 489 ticket price.

Even the pricey DX model is now over $ 100 cheaper than the cheapest of the Apple iPad range. Neither does the iPad come with connection to the internet for free as is the case for the Kindle range. Of course, the iPad is much more than an e-book reader, so it may be that people are prepared to pay more for a more powerful and versatile device – even if it does have much poorer battery life and a less “reading friendly” screen (which excels for other applications).

It will be interesting to see whether this downward price movement of e-book readers is simply a temporary reaction to the iPad or whether it heralds the dawn of a new pricing policy. It could be that companies like Amazon and Barnes and Noble might take advantage of the trend for higher priced e-books by offering lower priced hardware secure in the knowledge that they will make their profit throughout the life of the device. Or it may simply be a stalling tactic until the next generation color Kindle hits the streets later this year.

Learn All About DIY Solar Power

Conserving power and electricity should be everyone’s concern. We must not disregard the fact that our Mother nature is starting to collapse. We must act and let us start on the simple things we can do.

By caring for our environment, we can actually conserve the energy in simple ways such as lowering electric consumption. By building your own solar power, you will be able to produce cleaner energy. There are no known harmful side effects that may impose threat to uses and the environment.

The use of solar panels at home is advantageous and convenient. Since photovoltaic panels are now commercially available, producing solar power became easier. Even before, solar power was already playing a major role in the provision of human needs. The common solar power installation was able to cover the passive heating needs, hot water supplies, and the occasional active heating system.

Aside from using it at home, solar power can also be used commercially. Even businesses resort to the use of solar power system because it is a practical way. Due to the powerful heat of the sun, people makes use of its energy for different uses.

The alternative form of energy is obviously the answer to the growing domestic needs of every nation. Solar power works good in generating electrical energy needed by homes and businesses. It can be possible by using batteries for storage purposes.

Solar power produces supplementary type of electricity to power up household appliances and electronic devices throughout the day. It also covers the night time through the efficient banks of batteries that hold the “charge” received from the heat of the sun.

Some DIY solar power installation provides mutual benefits to the users and providers. It makes use of “net metering” that actually “sells” the electric power back to the utility company resulting to a lower monthly bill.

Every year, the number of solar power consumer increases and it is a great help for our already degrading planet. Though some solar power does not operate within 24 hours straight, it is still beneficial because it can decrease your electricity consumption little by little.

Since there are different DIY solar power manuals that can be found all around us, it is still suggested to seek for professional help when necessary. Some installation still needs supervision to ensure that it will work. This type of power is a very good investment and can definitely yield positive result.

Hybrid Electric Engines.

Have you ever asked yourself about hybrid cars? They certainly look stylish and modern, but what is it about them that makes them so different and so extraordinary? After all, most cars look the same these days, do they not? They are all designed by computer to be aerodynamic and aerodynamic is aerodynamic, so they all end up looking impossible to tell apart to anyone who is not an aficionado.

Well, the fact is that the difference between a hybrid car and a normal car lies under the bonnet. There are different types of hybrid vehicles as well, but the most common sort has a hybrid electric engine. Therefore, you could say that what makes hybrid cars different from most other, normal cars is their engine.

Or engines actually, because hybrid electric cars essentially have two engines. One, the internal combustion engine, runs on gasoline, LPG or diesel and the other, the electric motor, runs off electricity stored in an array of heavy-duty batteries. On the other hand, normal cars only have an internal combustion engine. It is a good idea to examine these two types of engine separately.

First of all the electric motor. Electrical energy is generated by several components on the car and stored in a large bank or array of powerful batteries. The electricity is created by the turning of the internal combustion engine, just as with a standard car, when it is in use, but also by the wheels or / and the car’s braking system. Different models have different methods of generating this electricity, but they are all very hi-tech and very efficient.

When the car’s internal computers decide that the car no longer needs the strength of the internal combustion engine, it will turn it off and switch to the electric motor instead. The conditions where this might happen are, for example, when you are driving slowly in inner-city traffic, when you are cruising at moderate speed on a flat road or when you are going down hill. This saves a considerable amount of fuel, which is clearly a great saving to you.

However, there are times when you need more power than the batteries can give you, for instance, when accelerating hard, when overtaking or when climbing a hill. At times such as these, the electric motor will close down and the combustion engine will take over and start supplying power to the accelerator and electricity to the batteries. When the need for extra power has ceased, the batteries will take over again.

These choices are all taken by the hybrid electric vehicle’s (HEV’s) on board computer system and you will not notice much other that a rush of power or a quietening of the propulsion system. This works very well in most scenarios, but some drivers of HEV’s would like to have a manual override for abnormal circumstances, such as an undulating terrain.

All in all, cars with hybrid electric engines work very well at reducing fuel bills but they are still too dear to be much more than a gimmicky toy and a salve to the conscience for the well-to-do.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article writes on a lot of subjects, but is currently involved with hybrid electric engines. If you would like to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at New Hybrid Vehicles.

Amazon’s Kindle Strategy – Books First, Readers Second

Since its November 2007 launch, the Amazon Kindle reader has been a great product for the company. The strong association that Amazon has with both books and electronics makes it the perfect product for their business model. After the release of the upgraded Kindle 2.0 in February of 2009, followed by the release of the large display Kindle DX model in the summer of the same year, the Kindle went on to become Amazon’s best selling product.

Over the festive period of 2009, the Kindle became Amazon’s most gifted product ever. On Christmas day of 2009, Amazon sold more Kindle books than physical volumes for the first time ever. Admittedly this was probably due to people who had received a Kindle as a Christmas gift testing it out by downloading a Kindle book or two – but it was a landmark event for Amazon and the Kindle nonetheless.

Amazon did seem to be a slightly reluctant manufacturer on occasions however. They seemed to bend over backwards to ensure that Kindle books could be read by people who didn’t have Kindles. At the moment, Amazon has released free Kindle “Apps” for a wide variety of different devices – many of which would be viewed as competitors of the Kindle. These include the PC, the Apple Mac, the Blackberry, the iPod Touch, the iPhone, the iPad and any device running Android. Amazon looked to be their own competition at times.

However, the method in Amazon’s madness became clear after the release of the Apple iPad. This saw the price of e-book readers fall as many consumers rushed to buy Apple’s new device which, amongst its many functions, was suitable for use as an e-book reader. However, at the same time as e-book reader prices were falling, the average price of the e-books to read on them was creeping ever upwards.

The main reason behind this was the deal which Apple had negotiated with the big publishing houses prior to the iPad’s launch. This allowed publishers to fix the price for the e-book versions of their publications at whatever level they wished – just so long as the e-book wasn’t offered at a lower price for any other reader – the Kindle for example. Amazon’s strategy of selling all e-books for $ 9.99 or less was pretty well destroyed overnight – and it started to look as if the iPad was not only a “Kindle Killer” but was going to mess up Amazon’s plans for e-book sales into the bargain.

However, a more detailed analysis of the situation shows that Amazon’s decision to release Kindle apps for just about every major device going was a stroke of genius on their part. Each App acts as an additional outlet for the sale of Kindle books – and given that e-book prices are rising, Amazon can afford to sell their Kindle hardware at a lower price secure in the knowledge that they will make a profit by selling Kindle books over the lifetime of the reader. If the iPad were to totally decimate the Kindle sales figures – an improbable scenario – Kindle books would continue to sell. No doubt, if another tablet computer or super duper reader launched tomorrow there would be “an App for that” within a couple of weeks. Amazon seem to know what they’re doing after all.
